Counting Sheep....

What do you do when you can't sleep?

A combination of age and circumstance mean that I am not sleeping.

I asked around......

Sally counts sheep
Brenda steps into the en-suite for 5 to re-set her head
Sue makes a cup of tea
Elaine reads her ipad

None of these are working for me.  But I read somewhere that
regulating your breathing with a sleeping person helps, so that was my plan.

I'm awake, husband is obviously asleep.
Ok, here we go

In..out..in..out..in..out............................

Hang on he's stopped breathing?

I do a further 4 breaths in and out before he breathes again.

So now I'm even more wide awake.  Bother.
And now I'm concerned about him. Double bother.

Not such a good idea then..........roll on 6.30 am.

  1. It might sound bonkers. Never thought I'd commit this to the page, but have you tried a few drops of lavender oil on your pillow? Recommended to me by a retired bloke with a very healthy dose of cynicism. It worked for him!

  2. I hate it if I wake up and one of these two things happen - either hubby is snoring and I can't get back to sleep, or he is doing an impression of not breathing and lie there for ages listening to him and I can't get back to sleep!! I hope that you find something that works for you! xx

  3. I've heard this works, but I've never tried it myself -
    Exhale through your mouth.
Close your mouth and inhale through your nose for a count of 4.
Hold your breath for 7 counts.
    Exhale for 8 counts.
    Repeat the sequence 3 times.

  4. Have you come across Mindfulness? If I can't sleep I practice that - just think about each part of your body - where it is on the bed, how the mattress and covers feel, the temperature etc. Focus on your breathing and empty your head of everything else if you can. By the time I get to my knees I am usually asleep! x
